The base size for a pattern is brand dependant, but for most UK based companies this is a size 8. The size range is also determined by the brand or designer, a standard range would be 6-18 with separate patterns usually created for plus size and petite ranges to ensure a good fit.

Pattern grading alters the size of patterns however, the garment style and fit remains consistent through the new additional larger and/or smaller sizes.

Pattern grading is essential for the success of any fashion brand as it offers optimal fit of garments in different sizes, this ensures the designer meets the needs of their customers various body shape, size, and types.

Pattern grading was developed and became popular around the 19th century with the start of commercialization and mass production of garments.

There are two main methods of pattern grading:

The first is the manual method using a cut and spread or pattern shifting technique.

The second is computer grading which is the most recent and fastest way of pattern grading. It essentially takes the manual process of grading and digitizes it with the help of a CAD software that scales the patterns up or down mathematically.
